Winter is in full effect and roadways in many states have become smaller due to massive amounts of snow. With increased amounts of snow come more frequent trips by snow plows on roadways. Many states continually warn motorists to be careful when traveling near snow plows on roadways. Unfortunately, car and truck accidents are evitable during the winter season and this includes accidents involving county snow plows. According to Ohio news reports, a truck accident occurred recently involving a semi truck and a snow plow that collided near Beavercreek late Friday afternoon. The truck accident occurred on U.S. Route 35 westbound at Trebein Road in Ohio.
According to Ohio State Highway Patrol, Interstate 77 South was shrunk to one lane and backed up traffic following a truck accident in which a semitrailer carrying building supplies was jackknifed. Following several fatal accidents, the Ohio Department of Transportation is warning Ohio motorists to be careful around commercial trucks and plows. A recent truck accident marked the 68th accident involving a snow plow this winter season in Ohio. Comparatively, there were 53 crashes and four fatalities in Ohio last year during the same period. Due to the already high numbers, ODOT is extremely concerned. As a result, "ODOT is recommending people stay at least four to five car lengths behind the plows, and pass with caution or not at all on two lane roads." Officials express that because of the "sheer length of the plow is 11 or 12 feet, and if they are driving in a lane that is 12 feet, you don't have a lot of room for error there."

According to one legal news source, over 500,000 trucking accidents occur every year in the United States. Approximately 5,000 of these truck accidents result in fatalities and even more result in serious injury or property damage. Many of these truck accident cases rely on evidence obtained from the commercial rigs themselves such as driver log books, which is a written or electronic log of the driver's time driving and resting, and black boxes. Black Boxes, also known as "electronic control modules" or "event data recorders" are electronic devices equipped in trucks that gather data about trip history and driver input. Additionally, if a commercial truck is involved in an accident, data about the crash is also recorded by the vehicle's black box.
